From the outside, this house appears to have remained the same for the past 100 years. It is thus difficult to imagine that designer Hashimoto has transformed this traditional teahouse into a contemporary nightclub.
Located in Gion, which is famous for its elegant restaurants and traditional machiya (terraced) geisha houses, the building in which Hika is located was built more than 100 years ago.
When refurbishing the interior, designer Yukio Hashimoto had to contend with strict preservation laws, which prohibit substantial structural alterations to traditional buildings in the area. He managed to introduce a radically new interiorâ a simple, modern space â within the confines of an old building.
Kyoto is filled with both very old and very new buildings, and I was looking for a way to harmonize tradition and modernity in this house," 'he says. When guests open the old-fashioned narrow wooden door they are likely to be surprised by the modern interior of this exclusive club, which features reflective materials, such as glass, marble, and gold foil.
A huge marble tsukubai (stone basin) on the ground floor is filled with water, which has cascaded down from a point near the ceiling. Sheets of glass sandwiched with pieces of gold foil add to the sleek feel of the space, as do partitions made of stainless steel and a wall of washi (handmade paper) lit from behind. These hard, reflective surfaces heighten the contrast between the wooden exterior of the house and the space within. The space is not extensive, but the diversity of materials and colors used provides a sense of drama and demonstrates the designer's success in fusing the contemporary and the traditional.
